Meet the Composer

Karaoke Superstar will be a dance/theater work influenced by our culture’s fascination with karaoke. Composer Du Yun will expropriate karaoke performances by Chinese singers of American pop songs to create new music of her own. Through strategies of de-contextualization, repetition, and live-feed video imaging, performers will be made over as near mythic figures as a commentary on pop culture and how much it makes us who we are and gives us collective memory. Performances will be presented by the Whitney Live Program at the Whitney Museum in spring 2009 with music performed live by the composer and ICE.
