Meet the Composer

The new music ensemble Beta Collide, with guest soprano Lucy Shelton, will perform Justine Chen's Philomel (soprano solo, flute, bassoon, horn trumpet, violin, cello and bass) on two concerts in Oregon. The 16 minute long piece will act as a radical companion piece to Milton Babbitt’s piece of the same name (for soprano and tape) on a concert that also features music by Mark Applebaum and Valentin Silvestrov.

Chen will participate in the following activities:

• Public presentation/lecture of her work at the University of Oregon
• Open rehearsal
• Radio interviews on KWAX and KLCC
• Public workshop during the dress rehearsal of the work
• Panel discussions following both performances
• Composer master class for composition students at the University of Oregon
