The commissioning program created by a partnership between Meet The Composer and The Wallace Foundation was the largest and most musically diverse in U.S. history. With Funds support totaling $3.1 million and additional funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, hundreds of new works were created and thousands of performances offered in cities from Fairbanks, Alaska to Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania. One unique aspect of the program was its focus on consortia which guaranteed that new compositions would be heard by multiple audiences.
Through commissioning programs and other efforts, Meet The Composer has heightened the profile of the American composer and developed major contributions to the musical legacy of our time. In directing these programs, Meet The Composer has demonstrated exemplary administrative energy and cost-effective management.
Today, The Wallace Foundation continue working to build participation in arts and cultural institutions. To achieve great growth in participation, great art is needed. The Wallace Foundation is proud to have been instrumental in the evolution of the varied and significant body of work celebrated in this document. We are grateful to Meet The Composer for its outstanding dedication to promoting the work of American composers.
