Project "Non Tacete: Silences that Generate Music" involves two components that together will showcase music composed by women while exploring the impact of gender on women composers both past and present. The seven-member vocal ensemble In Mulieribus will perform a concert featuring vocal music by women, and in most cases for women, on Saturday, October 11, 2011 at St Mary's Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. The program will feature music representing various musical periods from the Middle Ages through the present day.
A pre-concert lecture will be given on the role of women in Western music and the impact of gender on women composers throughout history. A panel discussion featuring the lecturer, Sharon Shafer, along with three of the living composers whose works will be performed on the program: Karen P. Thomas and Kay Rhie will follow the lecture to provide dialogue opportunities not only between each of the panelists, but directly with the audience. Additionally, a post-concert reception is scheduled after the performance where audience members will have additional opportunities to interact with the composers and share their reactions to the concert.
