Steven Bryant offers two performances during his residency at Gettysburg College:
Performance #1: Chamber Works and Discussion of Compositional Process
This performance will take place in the Paul Recital Hall on the campus of Gettysburg College on Thursday, Dec 1 and will feature both chamber performances of Bryant's works and a discussion of those works and other chamber music by the composer. This concert and discussion is free and open to the public.
Performance #2: The Works of Steven Bryant with the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony
The Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony will feature a concert entirely of Bryant's works, including Ecstatic Waters, MetaMarch, Dusk, and Radiant Joy. This concert will be held on Friday, Dec 2 in the Majestic Theatre mainstage and is open to the public ($5 admission, free to students and children)
Public Activities
Many public activities are planned in connection with this residency, including:
-An interview with WITF 89.5 classical music radio, Cary Burkett host
-Two open rehearsals with the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony - special invitations will be issued to local k-12 music programs
-A pre-concert lecture on Dec 2 featuring a discussion of the intersection of wind music, western art music and electronic music creation/performance
-An informal post-concert reception where Bryant and the audience can meet and discuss the music just performed
-The composer and conductor will produce a podcast discussing the music being performed as well as other music of Bryant's not on this program, his compositional process, and thoughts on the future of music for artistic wind orchestra
-Bryant will lead two open workshops on composition: one on traditional composition for mixed ensembles of varying size and one on the integration of electronic music composition on traditional compositional techniques
-Bryant will lead one open workshop on music for the school wind band - a question of artistic merit vs. educational goals: are they mutually exclusive?
-Bryant will participate in an open webinar to public schools where he will discuss his music with school musicians and take their questions; the composer will develop educational activities to accompany the webinar and concert performances for school musicians to use prior to the webinar and concert as well as post-webinar and concert.
