Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra/Adolphus Cunningham Hailstork: three-week residency Over its 35-year history, the Albany Symphony Orchestra has established a strong tradition in south Georgia of performing new music and music by American composers. They have hosted six visiting composers in mini-residencies during the last 10 seasons and commissioned new works by area composers. Their Music Alive residency with Adolphus Hailstork will enhance the Orchestra's new music activities by offering multiple performances of his music: on a regular subscription concert featuring a combined chorus from Albany's four high schools; at an Adventures in Music performance for all area fifth-grade students; and as a part of Celebration Concert IV, an annual event performed in Albany's historic Mt. Zion Baptist Church. In addition, Mr. Hailstork will engage the area's African-American community by working with students at Darton College and Albany State University.

American Composers Orchestra (NY)/P. Q. Phan: two-week residency The American Composers Orchestra was founded in 1977 to perform and promote the music of American composers, and remains the only orchestra in the world exclusively devoted to this goal. The orchestra recently commissioned P. Q. Phan to write When the Worlds Mixed and Times Merged, a 20-minute work to be performed on a concert program entitled "Pacifica," exploring Asian influences in American music. This concert is part of ACO's multi-year millennium celebration. His residency marks a renewed commitment to new music on the part of the Orchestra, which is directed by Leslie B. Dunner. From this season forward, it hopes to commission a new work every two to three years. During this residency, Mr. Paulus will work collaboratively with a group of seventh- to ninth-graders on a 10-minute composition to be performed at the end of the residency. He will also work with local composers and arrangers to identify local talent to be showcased by the orchestra.

Mr. Schnyder is currently working on a second Milwaukee Symphony commission: a piece for orchestra and chorus to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus in 2001. For his Music Alive residency, Mr. Schnyder will develop a new music listening series for the orchestra staff and board of directors, as well as for students at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

For each commission, the Orchestra will seek out ways to develop closer relationships between the composer and the various constituencies served by the Orchestra. As part of his residency, Mr. Sierra will work to increase the Orchestra's visibility within Philadelphia's large Latino community. During his residency in February 2001, Mr. Sierra will attend the world premiere of his Centennial Commission, the Concerto for Orchestra, which will be heard on three subscription concerts. It will also be performed in six youth concerts geared especially to Spanish-speaking audiences.
