Baltimore-based composer Ruby Fulton (b. 1981) grew up in Northwest Iowa. Along with composer George Lam, she is co-artistic director of Rhymes With Opera, a company committed to bringing new opera to unconventional spaces.
Her music has been heard recently at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the American Composers Orchestra New Music Readings, the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA, and the A•Devantgarde Festival in Munich. She has collaborated with Volti, the West End String Quartet, and the REDSHIFT ensemble.
Upcoming projects include pieces for marimba player Michael Compitello, Ensemble Klang, and the Bay Area bass clarinet duo, Sqwonk. She has studied with composers Julia Wolfe, Christopher Theofanidis, Moritz Eggert, Elinor Armer, Dan Becker, Charles Fussell, Tison Street and Martin Amlin. She holds degrees from Boston University and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and is currently finishing doctoral work at the Peabody Conservatory. She plays in the Baltimore bands Spoke Ensemble and Ike Shark, Incorporated.
