Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez

The quintet for shakuhachi and strings will be the Colorado Quartet’s first experience working with a non-western instrument in a cross-cultural context. Mr. Sanchez-Gutierrez has described his vision for the quintet as an engrossing conversation between two traditions in which sensibility and intuition – poetry- become a surface on which a quartet and a bamboo flute can write the story of their encounter. The resulting composition will meld and juxtapose the unmistakably passionate, angular and intense sounds of the shakuachi with the sophisticated and unified voice of the string quartet.
