St. Peter's in Chelsea, New York, NY
Chelsea Opera is presenting Tom Cipullo's two-act opera, Glory Denied, Nov 11, 12, and 13 (7:30 pm) and Nov 14 (4 pm) 2010. The opera, based on the oral history by Tom Philpott, tells the true story of the longest-held American prisoner of war, Colonel Floyd James Thompson, presumed dead, then declared a POW in Vietnam, who returns home after nine years in captivity only to find that his wife has left him for another man. Their attempt to reconcile fails, leaving him bitter and alone. The New York Times called the work “intriguing and unconventional,” and cited its “teeming, hard-edged neo-Romantic language (Anthony Tommasini, June 6, 2004). The production will be designed in what has become Chelsea Opera’s trademark: stylistically minimal sets and effective lighting, allowing the focus of the production to remain on the story, the music and the characters.
Join composer Tom Cipullo for a 20-minute interview and audience Q&A before each of the four performances.
