ODC Theater, San Francisco, CA
On November 12 & 13, 2010 at the newly rebuilt ODC Theater in San Francisco’s Mission District, the Paul Dresher Ensemble will premiere newly commissioned works by Ryan Brown, Bruce Pennycook, and Jack Perla. The concert will be performed by members of the Paul Dresher Ensemble’s Electro-Acoustic Band, including Joel Davel (mallet, percussion), Marja Mutru (piano, keyboards), Karen Bentley Pollick (violin), Gene Reffkin (percussion) and Jeff Anderle (clarinet, bass clarinet). Guitarist John Schott will perform on the Pennycook work, and tenor Thomas Glenn will solo on the Perla work.
The Program:
Ryan Brown, GangBusters (2010, 20 minutes) is a single movement work scored for mallets, keyboard, electric guitar, percussion, bass clarinet, and violin. It was commissioned by the Paul Dresher Ensemble with support from a 2007 William and Flora Hewlett and Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation Emerging Composer Award.
Bruce Pennycook, For Joe Z (2010, 10 minutes) was also commissioned by the Paul Dresher Ensemble. It is 12 minutes in length and scored for amplified violin, amplified bass clarinet, percussion/MIDI percussion, piano/synthesizer/organ, drum kit, electric guitar, electric bass, and numerous real-time sound processors and modifiers.
