Shapovalov and his parents will return to their American home to share stories of their immigration from the USSR to Minnesota during the cold war in the context of the concert “Russian Tales”. Shapovalov will perform in the world premiere of his piece Molitva (Prayer) on a program of Russian art music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Composer Jin Hi Kim will participate in 3 public performances as part of the week-long “Music and Meditation Cultural Arts Celebration”. Jin Hi Kim will join pre-concert introductory discussions and post-concert question and answer sessions. As part of the Celebration, she will also be working with Paul Bloom, the Director of New Haven Zen Center, to introduce meditation to area students and their families. A string quartet by Lowell Liebermann, commissioned by the Wood Library and the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival, will be premiered by the Orion Quartet on February 9th, 2008. Leading up to the performance, Liebermann will present a public program on his works and contemporary music in general, and also work with local high school students. Berenholtz will present his commissioned choral work “The Living Ketzalkoatl” on Global Harmony’s concert Agua para el Mundo: Music of Central America. Berenholtz’s piece uses Mayan text, extended vocal techniques and pre-Columbian instruments. In connection with the concert Berenholtz will present an Open Forum class on this history of Mayan culture and his combination of ancient elements with Western musical tradition. Andy Algire is working with Circuit Production on Sound Bridges, a collection of workshops and performances featuring Algire’s work in collaboration with the Feraba African Rhythm Tap.
