Works by Subotnick, Makan, Becker and Smith will be performed at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. In the days leading up to the performances the composers will participate in panel discussions at various Bay Area venues. For more information visit www.otherminds.org.

Parthenia, the viol consort, will present Hot off the Press - New Music and Poetry for 2008 on March 5th, 2008, featuring works by living composers. Before and after the concert the composers will participate in discussions and a Q&A session. For more information visit www.parthenia.org.

Steve Ricks’ music will be presented as part of the concert METAL AND WOOD MEET EARTH AND WATER on March 7, 2008. Following the performance, Ricks will present an open master class for Fear No Music’s Young Composers Project. Composer Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto will be performed by the Harrisburg Symphony on March 8th & 9th. Before the first performance, Ms. Higdon will speak and perform live at WITF’s Public Media Center. A portion of this event will be aired on WITF’s hour-long radio show Composing Thoughts. Alden Jenks’ new work The Soup will be performed by Ensemble Parallele in March and April 2008. Before each concert Jenks will participate in discussions with university students about his music and the dramatic and technological aspects of The Soup. Composer/conductor Jim Papoulis will conduct a songwriting workshop with children in the Heartland Youth Choir of Des Moines, IA. The event will be open to the public and Mr. Papoulis will be available for a Q&A session. The event will be followed by a concert featuring works by the composer. Composer and pianist Dan Cavanagh will be leading his jazz sextet Outburst in a performance of all original works on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 7:30pm. ARTSwego has commissioned composer Richard Einhorn to create The Origin, a multi-media oratorio based on the writings of Charles Darwin. In March, the work will be premiered on the campus of SUNY Oswego with original media elements created for the piece by filmmaker Bill Morrison. Einhorn’s one week residency leading up to the work’s premiere will include post-performance talk backs and a lecture shared with evolutionary biologist Amy Welsh. The Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra together with the St. Paul Central High School Orchestra and the De LaSalle High School Orchestra has commissioned the work “Maji” from Elizabeth Alexander. Each orchestra will perform the work at one of their regular season concerts after working with the composer. Ms. Alexander will participate in an open rehearsal and meet with the audience before the MPO’s premiere of the piece. For more information visit www.mnphil.org.

Composer Rand Steiger will join the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players for a performance of his work Dreamscape on Monday, March 17, 2008. Steiger will also participate in a public lecture on the work and will join the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players’ Music Director David Milnes for a pre-concert discussion. On March 17, 2008, Southwest Chamber Music will present Part II of its complete performances of William Kraft's Encounters. Encounters is a series of twelve groundbreaking works for percussion soloist and other instruments. Mr. Kraft will be in attendance and participate in a preconcert discussion. The 2008 MilkBar International Live Film Festival explores the intersections of music, film and performance. The featured composers will all present new works at the festival in collaboration with a film/performance artist. The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble’s concerts on March 27 and March 31, 2008: Words, Stories and Music will feature two new works by Harold Meltzer and Carl Schimmel. The works on these concerts focus on the various ways composers transmit the meaning of words through music. Mr. Sivan, together with the mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin, will perform the world-premiere of a new song cycle commissioned by the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival. Sivan will speak with the audience before and after the performance and give presentations to local music students.
