Beverly Grigsby’s opera The Mask of Eleanor for solo soprano, dancers, slide projections and computer-generated orchestra will be presented on Jan. 11, 2008. The composer will act as both stage director and choreographer for the piece. Before the performance Dr. Grigsby will present a lecture on the opera, its subject matter and composition. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session. Earlier in the week, Dr. Grigsby will present a master class for composition students at CSU Stanislaus that will be open to the public.

Bohmler's SAINTS (2001) and his new companion piece SINNERS will be featured in a full evening of the composers works. Bohmler will also participate in a pre-concert lecture and a post-concert reception.

Venues: Multiple Locations including Creative Seeds (Los Angeles, CA) and Rotunda Room, Veterans Memorial Complex (Culver City, CA)
Tonoi, a resident performing ensemble of The Definiens Project will present works by Hagen Schwartz and De Silva in open dress rehearsals which are designed to allow the audience to understand how the different musical ideas fit together. Each composer will also design a musical game that mirrors his compositional process to be presented before each performance. Following each concert, the composers will be available for a Q&A session.

Cooper-Moore's trio, Digital Primitives will perform a concert on January 18th and give a radio interview on KTRU, Rice University on the 23rd. Cooper-Moore will present an open community workshop on choral improvisation and Multicultural Education Counseling Through the Arts. Also in January, Cooper-Moore will work with Nameless Sound in training their teachers who work with underprivileged and disabled youth.

The Ethel Quartet will take their collaborative composition project Truck Stop to three new cities this winter. From January 14th to the 17th, Ethel members will be in San Antonio, TX exploring Con junto, dance music developed by Mexican and German immigrants in the early twentieth century. On the 21st of January they will begin a week-long residency in Chicago working with the young South Side percussion group, The Kaotic Drumline. They will also work with students in K-12 school workshops and at Dominion University. In February, they will be in residence at Steelgrass Ranch in Kauai, HI performing at various locations and participating in outreach events.

HERE Arts Center will present the work of 4 Resident Artists through their 3rd annual “Composers in Context” series as part of their annual CULTUREMART. Cilia Vee-Life Arts is commissioning composer Elisa Faires for the project MODUS OPERANDI. The project consists of a series of in-the-moment compositions which are based on words provided by the audience and performed by a choreographer/dancer and a composer/musician and facilitated by an actor in the character of a “Professor” conducting an experiment. The purpose is to create several short, abstract sound and movement duets, based on a structure which enables the audience to dictate the subject matter. Faires will also participate in a Meet and Greet, Q&A and a community workshop in connection with the project.

Seattle Chamber Players will present works by contemporary American composers in their Icebreaker IV: The American Future Festival. SCP has commissioned works by Clyne, Gardner, Greenstein and Muhly which will all premiere at the festival. Works by Duckworth and Duyker will be given regional premiers. The festival also features a symposium where all composers will give individual presentations on their works and participate in panel discussions.

Larry Karush will perform his “comprovisations” for solo piano and ensemble with world percussionists. This performance will feature new work, the collection-in-progress Songs for the New City, and other original repertoire and presented as part of the Concert Hour, a weekly event at Palomar College. The performance is 50 minutes in length. Of particular interest to us is Mr. Karush's desire and ability to interact with the audience during the performance, which would include explanations and insights related to his compositions. We also intend to schedule a master class/workshop immediately following the performance, which would be open to anyone interested.
