2004 GLOBAL CONNECTIONS RECIPIENTS

Hosting Organization: Sogdiana Uzbek Orchestra of National Instruments

Mr. Klipple will travel to Uzbekistan for two weeks of collaborative sessions with members of the Orchestra to create a new set of eight works which combine techniques and elements of traditional Uzbek music, American Jazz, and contemporary electronica.

The new works will then be performed in four locations throughout Uzbekistan. Mr. Klipple is also arranging a US tour with the Orchestra.

Ms. Frank has been invited by the OSBA to attend the performance of her new flute concerto,"Concierto de Picaflor".

Activities surrounding the performance include open rehearsals with a q & a forum, nationally broadcast radio interviews, television coverage of events, lecture demonstrations with OSBA's principle flutist at community centers in Salvador, Bahia, and visits to the Federal University of Bahia's music school.

Hosting Organization: Albany (NY) Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra has invited the three composers, two of whom were also commissioned, to attend the premieres of their works, part of a concert entitled "A Night in the Mediterranean".

Composer activities will include moderated pre-concert talks before all three performances (each in a different venue) and plans for three "community dinners" to allow extended, informal interaction with the composers, the soloist, and the residents of the Albany area.

Mr. Kojoukharov has been invited to undertake a two-part residency with the JPAS in New Orleans surrounding a production of his children's opera "The Cat's Paradise".

Mr. Kojoukharov will be heavily involved in the auditioning and rehearsing of the performers as well as other related education activities in the community. JPAS will make a significant effort to publicize the performances and to reach out to underserved communities in and near New Orleans.

Hosting Organization: Lelabo

Mr. Mellits will travel to Paris to participate in the rehearsals and performances of Lelabo's new multi-disciplinary work "M/W."

There will be three performances of the new work at the "100 dessus dessous" festival in Paris.

Composer: Wayne Vitale
Hosting Organization: Cudamani

Mr. Vitale will travel to Indonesia three times throughout the coming year to create a new work for the Cudamani gamelan ensemble.

In addition to working with the instruments and musicians of this traditional gamelan, he will also make field recordings throughout the village where the ensemble is based to incorporate into the new work. Once complete, Mr. Vitale and Cudumani will tour the new work throughout the United States.

Hosting Organization: Bali Arts Festival

Mr. Ziporyn and the Gamelan Balak Tika have been invited by the Festival to perform two of Mr. Ziporyn's works that explore intercultural themes by combining traditional gamelan instruments with both Western and Chinese instruments.

Mr. Little has been invited by the ensemble to be present at the premiere of a new work commissioned by the ensemble.

The performance will be part of a symposium held at the Saxonian Academy of the Arts on nature and the arts.

Mr. Rudd will travel to Benin for a month to work with the Gangbe Brass Band and prepare them for a performance of his "Ayler Suite".

Ms. Reynolds will travel to South Africa for a performance of her work Cloven Dreams by the Sontanga String Quartet.

She is also arranging further performances of her works at other locations in South Africa. She will also give two lectures at the University on the artist Helen Martin whose work inspired Cloven Dreams and on the integration of world music into the Western Classical style.

Ms. Danziger has been invited by the Artistec ensemble to travel to Cairo to create a new work with the ensemble's director, to be premiered at the end of her visit.

Present Music has invited the German-based Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh to spend one week in Milwaukee surrounding the performances of her work.

While in Milwaukee she will attend the three performances of her work, an additional two youth performances, rehearsals and three master classes. The concerts will be part of a larger festival celebrating Middle Eastern art and culture.

Global Connections Main
