Music Alive Inaugural Recipients
Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra/Adolphus Cunningham Hailstork: three-week
residency
Over its 35-year history, the Albany Symphony Orchestra has established a
strong tradition in south Georgia of performing new music and music by
American composers. They have hosted six visiting composers in
mini-residencies during the last 10 seasons and commissioned new works by
area composers. Their Music Alive residency with Adolphus Hailstork will
enhance the Orchestra's new music activities by offering multiple
performances of his music: on a regular subscription concert featuring a
combined chorus from Albany's four high schools; at an Adventures in Music
performance for all area fifth-grade students; and as a part of Celebration
Concert IV, an annual event performed in Albany's historic Mt. Zion Baptist
Church. In addition, Mr. Hailstork will engage the area's African-American
community by working with students at Darton College and Albany State
University.
American Composers Orchestra (NY)/P. Q. Phan: two-week residency
The American Composers Orchestra was founded in 1977 to perform and promote
the music of American composers, and remains the only orchestra in the
world exclusively devoted to this goal. The orchestra recently
commissioned P. Q. Phan to write When the Worlds Mixed and Times Merged, a
20-minute work to be performed on a concert program entitled "Pacifica,"
exploring Asian influences in American music. This concert is part of
ACO's multi-year millennium celebration. Mr. Phan's residency will promote
greater links between ACO and New York's Asian community and will feature
Mr. Phan's participation in Music Factory, ACO's new public school
education program.
Annapolis Symphony Orchestra/Stephen Paulus: two-week residency
The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1961, begins its first-ever
composer residency with Stephen Paulus' visit. His residency marks a
renewed commitment to new music on the part of the Orchestra, which is
directed by Leslie B. Dunner. From this season forward, it hopes to
commission a new work every two to three years. During this residency, Mr.
Paulus will work collaboratively with a group of seventh- to ninth-graders
on a 10-minute composition to be performed at the end of the residency. He
will also work with local composers and arrangers to identify local talent
to be showcased by the orchestra.
Los Angeles Philharmonic/Osvaldo Golijov: three-week residency
During his Music Alive residency, composer Osvaldo Golijov will work
closely with the Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians and artistic staff on
the preparation of his new suite fromThe Passion According to St. Mark.
Because Mr. Golijov has lived in Argentina and Jerusalem and has a strong
connection to the music of those countries, the Los Angeles Philharmonic
aims to strengthen its commitment to ethnic diversity within Los Angeles'
large multi-cultural population through his residency, with emphasis on its
Latino and Jewish communities. In addition, Mr. Golijov will make public
appearances throughout the whole Los Angeles community, including
pre-concert discussions, dialogues at colleges and conservatories, and
workshops for community organizations.
Milwaukee Symphony/Daniel Schnyder: four-week residency
Daniel Schnyder's upcoming residency builds on an existing relationship
with the Milwaukee Symphony that began in 1997 when he was commissioned to
write a work for organ and orchestra to celebrate new Music Director
Andreas Delfs' first season and the opening of the newly restored Uihlein
Hall. Mr. Schnyder is currently working on a second Milwaukee Symphony
commission: a piece for orchestra and chorus to celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus in 2001. For his Music Alive
residency, Mr. Schnyder will develop a new music listening series for the
orchestra staff and board of directors, as well as for students at the
University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
New Jersey Symphony/Bun-Ching Lam: two-week residency
Bun-Ching Lam's residency will coincide with a series of performances
celebrating the music of Asia and featuring the world premiere performance
of Ms. Lam's Song of P'ip'a for P'ip'a and Orchestra. The P'ip'a, an
ancient Chinese lute of the Wei dynasty (386-534), will be played on this
occasion by Chinese P'ip'a virtuoso, Wu Man. Song of P'ip'a was
commissioned by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra with support from the
AT&T Foundation.
Philadelphia Orchestra/Roberto Sierra: three-week residency
Continuing a century-long commitment to new music, The Philadelphia
Orchestra has commissioned Roberto Sierra and seven other distinguished
composers to write works for its Centennial, which falls in the year 2000.
For each commission, the Orchestra will seek out ways to develop closer
relationships between the composer and the various constituencies served by
the Orchestra. As part of his residency, Mr. Sierra will work to increase
the Orchestra's visibility within Philadelphia's large Latino community.
During his residency in February 2001, Mr. Sierra will attend the world
premiere of his Centennial Commission, the Concerto for Orchestra, which
will be heard on three subscription concerts. It will also be performed in
six youth concerts geared especially to Spanish-speaking audiences.
Seattle Symphony/Bright Sheng: two-week residency
Shanghai-born composer Bright Sheng's Music Alive residency in May 2001
will coincide with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra's Pacific Rim Festival, a
music festival being mounted by the Symphony in conjunction with the
Seattle Art Museum's exhibition entitled Encompassing Heaven and Earth:
Ancient Chinese Art from Sichuan.
